ESCLUSIVA: Cosmopolis Italia intervista Patricia Mckenzie (Kendra Hays)

Cosmopolis Italia - il film ha un’altra esclusiva per voi! Siamo riuscite a metterci in contatto con l’attrice Patricia Mckenzie che in Cosmopolis interpreta Kendra Hays, una (sexy) guardia del corpo ingaggiata per proteggere  Eric Packer, al posto della sua precedente Bodyguard.

"Aveva la pelle color marrone corallo e degli zigomi ben definiti. Era come se avesse un alone di cera sulle labbra. Le piaceva essere guardata e quasi sembrava si spogliasse in pubblico con orgoglio, una presentazione oltre i confini nazionali con un elemento di sfida poco appariscente. Indossava la sua armatura di ZyloFlex anche mentre facevano sesso. Era stata una sua idea. Gli aveva detto che la fibra balistica era la più leggera e soffice esistente al mondo, e la più resistente anche ai tagli.

Si chiamava Kendra Hays ed era disinvolta in sua presenza. Iniziarono a fare una piccola lotta per qualche secondo. Lui leccò punti sparsi del suo corpo, lasciandosi dietro una scia luminosa di saliva.

"Ti sei allenato," gli disse.

"Sei percento di grasso corporeo."

Cosmopolis Italia: Sei un artista a 360°, canti, reciti, balli e produci, il Montreal Gazette ti ha definito una donna dai molti talenti, ma se un giorno dovessi rinunciare ad uno di questi lavori, a quale rinunceresti?

Patricia McKenzie:  All' inizio della mia carriera mi sono accorta che potevo fare tutto quello che volevo se ci avessi dedicato con tutto il cuore una parte della mia vita. Una carriera come ballerina può essere veramente breve, così ho deciso di dedicarmi prima a quella e poi, quando mi sono appassionata al musical, facendo spettacoli come il re leone, il gobbo di notre dame e Chicago, ho potuto unire insieme anche la mia carriera come cantante e attrice. Anche se la mia vita da ballerina mi è piaciuta tantissimo, sono stata felice quando ho dovuto abbandonare la danza e mi sono dedicata alla recitazione a tempo pieno. Quando la mia carriera come attrice terminerà, mi piacerebbe diventare una produttrice a tempo pieno. per potermi ambientare a questo tipo di lavoro ho iniziato a produrre la mia musica e anche alcuni cortometraggi e pubblicità. Qualsiasi cosa faccia oggi, viene da anni di allenamento e preparazione. Cantare non è stato facile per me. Mi vergognavo molto di come si sentiva la qualità del mio suono e proprio perchè la voce è collegata molto alle emozioni spesso ho pianto mentre cantavo! Ho perseverato, ho preso lezioni e ho accettato ingaggi anche quando mi spaventavano, quindi oggi seguirò la mia carriera come cantante ovunque mi porterà. Per adesso mi piace molto comporre e registrare musica ogni volta che ho una pausa dal mio lavoro come attrice. Il mio fidanzato mi ha appena comprato un pianoforte, quindi sono tornata alle origini, imparare a suonare canzoni a casa.

CI: Nel film Stardom, interpretavi te stessa ? Se sì come è stato?

PM:  Ho fatto la parte di una Video Jockey in Stardom. Sally era molto diversa da me. Era una parodia di una VJ a cui piaceva fare domande molto velocemente e a cui importava pochissimo delle risposte

e molto dell' immagine. E' stato il mio primo film, l'esperienza è stata molto divertente e il regista, Denys Arcand mi ha aiutato ad avere più sicurezza in me stessa quando mi ha detto che avrei avuto successo in questo business. Lui, come moltissimi altri registi di talento con cui ho avuto il piacere di lavorare, mi ha semplicemente permesso di immedesimarmi nel personaggio e ha semplicemente filmato quello che vedeva.

CI:  In Cosmopolis  interpreti Kendra Hays, ci puoi raccontare  qualcosa su questo personaggio, chi è Kendra?

PM: Kendra è un esibizionista bramosa di potere e vuole dominare sessualmente Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson). Inizialmente viene assunta come guardia del corpo, ma subito diventa la sua amante. Loro due sono opposti in molti modi, ma entrambi sono vuoti dentro e stanno cercando il significato della loro esistenza. Alla fine, rischiano di lasciarsi sentendosi vuoti come all' inizio.

CI: Com'è stato lavorare con il regista David Cronenberg?
PM: Probabilmente è stata la mia esperienza preferita su tutte le produzioni. David è il regista da sogno con cui lavorare. La prima volta che l'ho conosciuto, mi ha dato un enorme abbraccio e mi ha detto "Finalmente ci conosciamo!" è molto calmo e sicuro di se, cosa che mi ha fatto sentire subito vulnerabile nei suoi confronti. Dopo ogni scena, veniva da me e Rob e ci diceva "Un altra scena meravigliosa!" era un enorme sollievo, perchè stavamo girando scene d' amore molto complicate con dialoghi meravigliosamente strani di Don Delillo. Il mio unico problema è stato il fatto che abbiamo terminato le riprese 6 giorni prima rispetto al calendario e nessuno di noi era pronto a lasciarsi questa meravigliosa esperienza alle spalle. Mi piacerebbe girare una serie televisiva con David Cronenber come regista!

CI: Com'era  l'atmosfera sul set?

PM: Il clima sul set è stato felice, una famiglia pacifica, perchè David da a tutti il tempo di cui hanno bisogno per fare il proprio lavoro al meglio. Ha anche l'abitudine di ingaggiare le stesse persone così che il cast e la crew sono sempre un misto invidiabile di talento, professionalità e devozione senza manie di protagonismo che aiutano a dare come risultato un grandissimo film.

CI: Hai dato a Robert Pattinson qualche suggerimento durante le riprese?

PM: La nostra scena di sesso è stata girata un mese prima di quando era stata prevista ed entrambi non abbiamo avuto il tempo di metterci in forma come avremmo voluto, ma mentre io avevo fatto una seduta intensa di attività fisica 3 giorni prima, lui era andato in un pub e aveva bevuto birra. Robert però ha già un incredibile presenza scenica quasi spontanea, quindi è molto tranquillo riguardo il suo aspetto fisico.

Alcuni mesi prima che iniziassero le riprese, avevo iniziato box e combattimento e ho fatto 3 settimane di disintossicamento. Era qualcosa che volevo provare da tempo, quindi ho usato il film come scusa, Mi è veramente piaciuto questo procedimento, e adesso ho aggiunto la box e il mangiare sano al mio stile di vita.

CI: Questo progetto per te è stato più difficile di tutti quelli che hai fatto in passato, considerando la tua lunga carriera?

PM: Questo probabilmente è stato uno dei progetti più facile nel quale io abbia mai lavorato. Il clima sul set è stato sempre rilassato e divertente. Ho lavorato molto su me stessa prima di girare, quindi mi sono sentita pronta emotivamente e fisicamente ad essere vulnerabile e nuda davanti la telecamera. Tutto quello che mi era rimasto da fare durante le riprese era divertirmi!!

CI: Nel libro il tuo personaggio è descritto come forte e sicuro di sé, puoi vedere queste qualità in te stesso?
PM:  Oh si. Kendra non ha paura di essere vulnerabile e rischiare nella vita, ed è lo stesso per me. Non voglio avere nessun rimpianto riguardo a cose che avrei voluto fare ma che non ho fatto perchè avevo paura di sembrare pazza o di fallire. Se una strada mi porta verso il fallimento, saprò però di aver provato e che potrò sempre intraprendere un altra strada, o magari imparare a navigare sulla prima. Fino ad ora ho imparato che anche il sogno più impossibile può diventare realtà se ti ci dedichi e sei sicuro di quello che vuoi. Ho studiato danza classica da bambina e mi ha dato una forza interna e una disciplina che ancora oggi uso tutti i giorni.
Per il resto di solito sono molto estroversa e simpatica, ma alcune volte posso essere anche timida e insicura. Fortunatamente, il mio desiderio di sconfiggere le mie paure supera il desiderio di proteggere me stessa dalle opinioni altrui. La mia prestanza fisica è forte allo stesso modo, il che porta le persone a vedermi capace a comandare.Visto che la gente mi ha sempre trattata in questo modo alla fine lo sono diventata realmente.

CI: Una delle tue scene riprende te mentre spari a Robert con un taser..è successo qualcosa di divertente quel giorno? Puoi dirci qualcosa a riguardo?

PM:  Per me una cosa divertente è stata come tutti quanti si sono avvicinati a questa scena senza avere la più pallida idea di cosa sarebbe successo, ma pronti a provare qualsiasi cosa. David, Robert ed io abbiamo esplorato insieme il modo in cui avremmo potuto inscenare il tutto se fosse stata una scena teatrale. Pensavamo di essere riusciti a trovare l' idea giusta, quindi abbiamo preso una pausa pranzo per permettere alla crew il tempo di posizionare le luci sulla scena. Poi, dopo pranzo, David ci ha detto che voleva girare la scena in maniera differente quindi la crew ha riposizionato le luci e Robert ed Io abbiamo avuto il tempo di conoscerci un pò meglio prima di girare questa scena d' amore. Il risultato è stato meraviglioso, molto sexy, intenso e divertente. Non posso proprio dire cosa sia successo con il taser, dovrete vedere il film per scoprirlo.

PM: Grazie mille, ve ne sono grata, mi sono piaciute queste domande ben ponderate.

Cosmopolis Italia: Your are 360° artist, you are a singer, a dancer, an actress and a producer, the Montreal Gazette describes you as a woman with many talents. If one day you’ll have to chose one of these jobs over the others, which will you chose?

Patricia McKenzie: Early on in my career I realized I could do everything I wanted to do if I dedicated a portion of my life wholeheartedly to it. A dancer's career can be very short, so I chose to focus on that first and eventually, when I got into musical theatre, doing shows like The Lion King, The Hunch-back of Notre-Dame and Chicago, I was able to combine my acting and singing training, onstage. Although I enjoyed the life of a dancer very much, I was happy when my time came to let go of dancing and transition into acting full time.

When my acting career ends, I will look at becoming a producer full time. To ease into it, I have been producing my music, and starting to produce some short films and commercials. Whatever I do today, stems from years of training and preparation. Singing didn't come easily to me. I was very shy about how I sounded and because the voice is so connected to emotion, I always used to cry when I sang! I persisted, took lessons and accepted singing opportunities even when it scared me, so today I will take let my career as a singer take whatever form it leads me to. For now, I enjoy going to the recording studio and composing music whenever I have a break in my acting schedule. My fiance just bought me a piano, so I am back to my childhood roots, learning to play songs at home.

CI: In the movie “Stardom” did you play yourself? If yes how was it?

PM: I played a Video Jockey in the movie Stardom. Sally was very different from me. She was a parody of a VJ's who liked to ask questions very quickly, and cared less about the answers than the image. It was my first film, the experience was a lot of fun and the director, Denys Arcand filled me with confidence when he told me I would do very well in this business. He, like many other very talented directors I've had the pleasure to work with, simply allowed me to immerse myself in the character and he filmed what he saw.

CI: In “Cosmopolis” you play Kendra Hays, Can you tell us something about her? Who is Kendra?

PM: Kendra is an exhibitionist who craves power and wants to dominate Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) sexually. She was initially hired to be his bodyguard, but quickly becomes his lover. They are opposites in many ways, but both are hollow inside and searching for meaning in their existence. Ultimately, they risk leaving each other feeling as empty as they started.

CI: How was working with director David Cronenberg?

PM: Possibly my favourite experience on any production ever. David is a dream director to work with. The first time I met him, he gave me a big hug, and said "At last, we meet!" He is very calm and confident which made me feel that I could be instantly vulnerable with him. After each take, he would say to me and Rob, "Another great take!" It was a great relief, because we were shooting a fairly complicated love scene with wonderfully strange dialogue by Don Delillo. My only complaint was that we finished 6 days earlier than we were supposed to and none of us ready to leave that wonderful experience behind so soon. I would love to star in a long running TV series with David Cronenberg as the director!

CI: How was the mood on set?

PM: The mood of set was that of a happy, peaceful family, because David he gives everyone the time they need to do their best work. He also has a tendency to rehire the same people so the cast and crew are always an enviable mix of talent, professionalism and ego-less devotion to deliver a great film.

CI: Did you give any workout tips to Robert Pattinson? How about your own workout schedule?

PM: Our love scene happened one month ahead of schedule so neither of us had time to get in the exact shape we wanted to be in, but I did a juice fast three days prior, and he went to the pub and drank a beer. Rob already has an incredible screen presence that comes easily to him, so he is very relaxed about how he appears.

A few months before we started shooting, I started boxing and combat training and I did a 3 week detox. It was something I always wanted to try, so I used the film as my motivation. I really enjoyed the process and have integrated the healthy eating and the boxing into my lifestyle.

CI: One of your scene involves you shooting Robert with a taser gun..did something funny happened that day? can you tell us something about it?

PM: For me the funny thing was that everyone approached the scene with no idea what was going to happen, but to be ready for anything. David, Robert and I explored it together, the way we might do if it were a play. We thought we had it nailed down, so we took a lunch break for the crew to light the scene. Then, after lunch, David said he wanted to shoot the scene a different way so the crew took time to re-light everything and Robert and I had time to bond a bit more before we started shooting the love scene. The result is amazing, very sexy, tense and humorous. I can't really say what happens with the taser, you will have to see the movie to find out!

CI: In the book your character is describe as strong and confident, can you see these qualities in yourself?

PM: Oh yes. Kendra is not afraid to be vulnerable and take risks, and neither am I. I don't want to have any regrets about things I wish I had done, by being too afraid to look foolish or fail. If one road leads me to failure, then I know I tried and I can choose another road, or learn to navigate the first one. So far, I have learned that even the most impossible of dreams come true if you dedicate yourself to them, and are clear about what you want. I studied ballet as a child, which gave me an inner strength and discipline that I still use every day.

As for confidence, usually I am out-going and silly, but I can at times be shy, and unsure. Luckily, my desire to conquer my fears overrides my desire to protect myself from the opinions of others. My physical build is strong as well, which leads people to view me as capable, and commanding. Since people have always treated me that way, I have become that way.

CI: Was this project harder then everything you ever done , considering your long career?

PM: This was probably one of the easiest projects I have ever worked on. The mood on set was always very relaxed and fun. I did a lot of work on myself prior to shooting, so I felt ready emotionally and physically to be vulnerable and even naked, on camera. All that was left to do while we were shooting, was have fun!
